Shopping in Goa

Shopping in Goa

After much relaxation and leisure experienced at the beaches of Goa, it is time to indulge in some shopping. The variety of items this palm-fringed state offers is simply amazing. Goa offers a unique shopping time to its visitors. Pick Goan hats, motorbikes and items made from coconut shell.

Annual fairs in Goa are hosted by almost every temple and church which offer the best homemade pickles and cottage handicrafts. Apart from traditional artifacts, the lifestyle stores of Goa offer everything that a modern day traveller wishes to pick. The vendors are dressed up in bright costumes and delight you completely with their communication in English. Goa is a perfect destination for shopaholics to be at.

The skilled craftsmen of Goa are real show stealers. During your holiday in Goa, you will not be able to resist yourself from laying hands on the exquisite handicrafts prepared by them. These craftsmen who occupy the pavements of villages and beaches, create matchless objects from natural raw material. Jewellery, lampshades in brass, terracotta wall hangings and coconut shell decors are amongst the best bet. Not to forget the mention of fine embroidery and lace which forms an inseparable part of the tradition of Goa.

Cuncolim in South Goa is known for its colourful wooden lacquer articles. Locally called 'chitaris', these objects are a must-buy in Goa. Coconut shells handsomely crafted out in the shapes of a Goan man or the head of Lord Ganesha are Goa's special gifts you may pick up for your loved ones.

Throughout the state you will see several government handicraft emporia that sell authentic handicrafts of Goa at an affordable price. Apart from this, the Craft Complex in Panjim is yet another recommended shopping place in Goa. Handiwork of Goan artisans available here are beautiful and cheap.

The charm of shopping amidst the flea market in the rural area of Goa is next to nothing. The weekly 'haats' display an array of electronic goods, waistcoats with mirror-work, linen, Balinese batik and jewellery. Lay hands on everything here but do not forget to bargain. Besides enjoying the shopping spree, savour mouth-watering snacks, listen melodious music and see  a riot of brilliant colours and sparkling lights. All this and much more will leave you behind asking for even more.

The small shops lined on the last leg of the innumerable beaches that dot the Goan landscape, sell everything ranging from sarongs to handicrafts. Enjoy cashew nuts – raw, grilled, slated, fried, spiced, accompanied by a bottle of fenny, Goa's own drink. A perfect finale to the exciting experience of shopping is Goa.
