The Reis Magos rural community resides on the banks of River Mandovi. The two major landmarks of the Reis Magos village are the Reis Magos Church and the Reis Magos Fort. Reis Magos is one of the three places in Goa where the extra-ordinary Feast of the Three Wise Men takes place. It was dedicated to the three characters of the Christmas story, namely Melchior, Caspar and Balthasar.
Among the oldest churches in Goa, the Reis Magos Church was constructed in the year 1555. The brightly painted entrance of the church is clearly visible from across the river in Panaji. Franciscan friars were responsible for the missionary work to be performed in the area. They took on the responsibility of managing the activities of the church and also founded a small seminary here.
The interiors of the church are bright and fascinating. The multi-hued ceiling in wood displays the Three Wise Men holding gifts for Baby Jesus. The intricately carved and neatly painted screen behind the altar add to the beauty of the interiors.
